Knights Swept in Season-Opener at Hamilton

Clinton, NY – A walk-off single in the ninth of game one and errors in game two doomed the Clarkson University Baseball team in its season-opening doubleheader as the Golden Knights were swept 6-5 and 6-1 at Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights open the season at 0-2 and won't be able to get on the winning side until their Florida trip as Sunday's doubleheader was cancelled due to the weather.

In game one, Clarkson received three-hit games from each of its first three hitters in the order as Michael Tito was 3-for-4, Tommy Bianchi went 3-for-5 with three extra-base hits, and Brad Pearson was 3-for-5. The Knights scored twice in the top of the first of the opener when Vincent Granuzzo plated Nolan Duda and a sacrifice fly from Nate Burns scored Pearson. Hamilton responded with four runs over the next two innings, including three in the bottom of the second. Ethan Murphy, Nate Goodman and Ethan Wallis each delivered run scoring singles in the second and Jordan Northrup drove in another run in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly.

Clarkson tied the game in the top of the seventh as Hamilton's defense failed its pitching staff. Duda reached on an error and then scored on another after Tommy Bianchi's double pushed him to third. Burns then singled through the left side for another unearned run. The Knights took the lead in the top of the ninth as Bianchi tripled to right center and scored on a double to left by Pearson to make the score 5-4. However, the bottom of the ninth saw the Continentals put runners on first and second with one out before a fly out had the Knights one out away from the win. Another infield single loaded the bases, setting up Rich Marooney as a potential hitter. The pinch-hitter came through with a single up the middle to plate a pair, giving Hamilton a 6-5 win.

The Knights looked to regroup in game two, scoring once in the top of the first when Nate Burns singled to the shortstop, but a throwing error allowed Bianchi to score to put the Knights up 1-0. The Continentals responded with a run in the bottom of the first, executing a two-out double steal, with Wallis taking home on the play. Hamilton picked up two more runs in the bottom of the third, loading the bases without an out. However, a double play appeared to limit the damage as just one run came home with the two outs. A fielding error allowed another run to score, making the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the bases were loaded once again, but this time with two outs. They were quickly cleared when Jarrett Lee cleared them on a double to left-center, putting Hamilton up 6-1. Clarkson did little to threaten the rest of the way, recording just one hit in the seventh. The two teams combined for just seven hits in game two, with Clarkson recording four and Hamilton picking up three, but reaching base five extra times via bases on balls.
