Clarkson Settles for 2-2 Tie at Michigan Tech

Two of the hottest teams in the country battled to deadlock at MacInnes Arena in Houghton, MI on Friday night as 4/5th-ranked Clarkson and Michigan Tech settled for a 2-2 tie.

The Golden Knights, of ECAC Hockey, and the Huskies, from the WCHA, will close out their non-league series on Saturday, beginning at 6:07 p.m.

At 4-0-1 in its last five games, Clarkson stands at 11-3-2 overall.  Michigan Tech, 3-0-1 in it last four outings, goes to 10-7-1.

Despite allowing the first goal of the game, the Knights put in a solid 40 minutes of play in their first ever appearance at MacInnes Arena and held a 2-1 advantage through two periods.

The Huskies, however, scored early in the third period and dominated the final 20 minutes of regulation, outshooting the Green and Gold 18-2 in the stanza.

Michigan Tech opened the scoring with Alex Smith connecting on the power play at 6:16.

The Knights made it 1-1 when senior left wing Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) fired in a wrist shot from the left circle off an assist from defenseman Jordan Schneider (Toronto, ONT) at 14:18 for his sixth goal of the season.

Clarkson went on its only man-advantage opportunity of the game 19 seconds later and generated several excellent scoring opportunities, but could not finish for the go-ahead score as the teams skated into the first intermission tied 1-1.

Junior Grant Cooper (Cornwall, ONT) found a loose puck at the side of the net and lifted in a shot short-side high for a 2-1 Clarkson lead at 2:40 to start the second period. Linemates, freshman Mathieu Gosselin (Quebec City, QUE) and sophomore Jamie Collins (Fergus, ONT) set up the score.

The Huskies scored early in the third as Greyson Reitmeier tallied his first goal of the season 1:46 in during a 4-4 situation for a 2-2 game.

Frank Marotte, Clarkson's graduate transfer in goal, posted 37 saves, one stop off his Clarkson-career high, including 17 in the third period to hold off Michigan Tech.

The Knights controlled play in the five-minute extra session, outshooting the home team 3-0 in overtime.

Michigan Tech held a 39-27 shot advantage for the game.

Clarkson was 0-of-1 on the power play, while the Huskies went 1-of-2 with the man-advantage.

The Knights are 9-0-1 when leading through two periods and are 3-0-2 in overtime games this season.
