Clarkson Travels to Michigan to Open 2019-20 Season

Entering its 98th season of play this weekend, Clarkson University will be making its first ever appearance at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, MI when it takes on Big10 foe University of Michigan in a two-game, non-league series. Both games are 7:30 p.m. faceoffs.

Coming off a 26-11-2 campaign last season, the Golden Knights are projected to be a contender as one of the top teams in the country in 2019-20. Guided by ninth-year Head Coach Casey Jones, Associate Head Coach Josh Hauge and Assistant Coach Mike Towns, Clarkson is ranked 11th in the national polls.

The Knights, who have complied 87 victories over the past four seasons, have made two consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament and won the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament last March. Nineteen lettermen and seven newcomers make up the Green and Gold roster.

 
• Two traditional powers in NCAA Hockey, Clarkson and Michigan have only played each other five times with the Wolverines holding a 3-2 advantage. The Knights won the last meeting, two years ago in Potsdam, shutting out the Wolverines 3-0 at Cheel Arena on October 7, 2017. The series first started on November 28, 1958 with Michigan earning a 6-3 victory at Clarkson Arena. The Wolverines won again in Potsdam, earning an 8-0 shutout on November 27, 1959. The Knights' first win in the series was a 5-4 triumph in the 1962 NCAA semifinals on March 15 in Utica. Michigan edged the Green and Gold 2-0 in the 2008 NCAA East Regional on March 29 in Albany. This weekend will be the first games ever played at Yost ice Arena between Clarkson and Michigan.
• Junior defenseman Connor McCarthy is the only current Knight with a point in the series against Michigan, recording an assist on the opening goal in the 3-0 victory in 2017.
• Clarkson was dominant in its preseason exhibition game against Royal Military College on Saturday at Cheel Arena, outshooting the visitors 56-19 en route to a 7-0 win. McCarthy led the way with a pair of power-play goals and two assists. Sophomore Adam Tisdale also tallied two goals and added an assist. Junior Jack Jacome, sophomore Anthony Callin and freshman Mathieu Gosselin rounded out the Golden Knight goal scorers. Sophomore Nick Campoli recorded three assists and classmate Josh Dunne set up a pair of scores. Graduate transfer Frank Marotte started in the Knights' crease and made 13 saves through two periods of action. Junior Kris Oldham turned aside all six shots he faced over the final 20 minutes in his first action as a Golden Knight.
• Clarkson officially opens the season on the road for the second consecutive year after starting 2018-19 with a two-game series at Penn State. The Knights dropped both games in Happy Valley, PA last year, falling to the Nittany Lions 4-3 and 5-1 on October 11-12.
• Since the 2000-2001 campaign, the Knights are 7-11-1 in official season openers, and are 4-3-1 with Casey Jones as head coach. Clarkson's last season-opening victory was a 2-1 triumph over Penn State at Cheel on October 6, 2017, followed by a 3-0 win over Michigan the next night.
• Clarkson is 3-9 all-time against Big10 opponents since the league was formed in 2013-14.  The Knights went 1-3 last year, defeating Wisconsin (4-2) in Potsdam and losing twice at Penn State (4-3, 5-1) and losing to Notre Dame (3-2 ot) in the NCAA Northeast Regional. The Green and Gold will play a weekend series at Wisconsin on October 25-26 for its only other regular-season action against a Big10 foe this season.
• Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft. Junior Kris Oldham – 2015 by Tampa Bay (6th round, 153 overall), sophomore Nick Campoli – 2017 by Las Vegas (6th, 158), freshman Dustyn McFaul – 2018 by Boston (6th, 181) and freshman Anthony Romano – 2019 by Arizona (6th, 176).
• Several Clarkson alumni are playing in the NHL and AHL at the start of the 2019-20 professional season. Defenseman Mark Borowiecki '11 has played parts of the past eight seasons in the NHL with Ottawa and serves as a Senators Assistant captain this year. The Knights' leading scorers from each of the past three seasons, who all left college for the pro ranks early, are starting the 2019-20 campaign in the AHL - Sam Vigneault '17 is with the Cleveland Monsters, Sheldon Rempal '18 is with the Ontario Reign and Nico Sturm '19 is with the Iowa Wild. Forwards Ben Sexton '14 and Jarrett Burton '14 are with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Rochester Americans, respectively. Defenseman James de Haas '17 plays plays with the  Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Forward Josh Dickinson '18 is listed on the Colorado Eagles' roster. Several other former Knights will be listed on ECHL rosters once that league's season begins later this week.

Scouting Michigan
In his third season as the Wolverines Head Coach Mel Pearson will look to guide Michigan back among Big 10's elite. The Wolverines return an experienced team with nine seniors, who will be striving to improve upon last year's 13-16-7 overall record, which included a fifth-place 9-10-5-2 Big Ten finish. Michigan got off to a good start with an 8-2 exhibition victory over Windsor on Sunday at Yost Ice Arena.
