Knights Drop 3-2 Decision at RPI

Troy, NY – After numerous goals in the first half, it was a Meagan Letko goal off a header midway through the second half that gave Rensselaer a 3-2 Liberty League win over the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 9-6-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the Liberty League while the Engineers picked up a much-needed win to improve to 6-6-2 overall and 3-4-0 in conference games. Clarkson will look to hold onto its playoff hopes when the team takes on St. Lawrence University on Tuesday afternoon.

The scoreboard operator was oddly busy in the first half as the two teams combined for four goals in the opening 27 minutes of play. Rensselaer opened things up by converting on a penalty kick at the 6:09 mark as Alexis Castrellon went low to the far post, just outside the outstretched right hand of Clarkson goalkeeper Elyse Green. Clarkson came right back eight minutes later as senior Giulia Mahoney capitalized on an Engineers' miscue. Mahoney stole the ball on a backward pass near midfield and carried the ball into the center of the field about 30 yards out. She then sent a pass to classmate Camryn Careccia, who took one step and blasted a high shot from the top corner of the penalty area, going to the opposite side for the goal at 14:22.

The tie was short-lived, however as Whitney Wisnom put together a solid effort to give RPI a 2-1 lead. Following a throw in, Wisnom passed the ball off near the sideline and then sprinted forward to receive a quick pass behind all but one Clarkson defender. Wisnom then slipped around the Clarkson defense for a one-on-one with Green, beating the Clarkson keeper short side at 18:15. Eight minutes later, the Knights knotted the game up once again as Danielle Martin started the play with a free kick into the box. RPI goalkeeper Joey Lyons punched the ball out but it ended up on the foot of Clarkson's Alison Coon. The junior popped a pass up, but with Lyons temporarily out of the play it was a matter of who could win the ball near the goal line. Giulia Mahoney ended the play with a perfectly timed jump, heading the ball in at 26:25 to tie the game 2-2.

Offense was comparatively muted in the second half, especially for the Knights. Though Clarkson only narrowly trailed in shots (12-9), the Knights could not get any of their second half attempts on the frame. RPI took advantage, scoring the lone goal of the second half midway through the period. A perfect cross on a corner kick ended up on the head of Meagan Letko, and she finished off the play into the top corner at the far post at 66:37.

RPI led in shots (12-9), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kick chances (4-2). Elyse Green made four saves for Clarkson and Joey Lyons went without a save but still picked up the win.
