Clarkson Cruises with 6-0 Win in Season-Opener Against Mount St. Vincent

Potsdam, NY - Five goals were recorded in the first 40 minutes by the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and a sixth goal in the 49th minute was more than enough insurance as the Golden Knights cruised to a 6-0 win over Mount St. Vincent in the first game of the North Country Classic Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights will take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at 2:30 pm in the second game of the annual tournament on Saturday afternoon.

It took little time for the Knight to assert their dominance against the Dolphins scoring in the ninth minute when Giulia Mahoney found Summer Gillespie with a through ball up close to give Clarkson a 1-0 advantage. Mahoney again found a teammate at 17:23, slotting a ball through the back line to find Camryn Carreccia to put Clarkson up 2-0.

Clarkson was kept off the scoreboard for the next 16 minutes, but then scored three times in less than six minutes to put the game away. Carreccia centered a ball to Alicia Bushey from the left side at 33:21, and Bushey located Gabrielle Mullane with a give-and-go at 38:09 to put Clarkson up 4-0. Just 67 seconds later, Mahoney scored her first goal of the season when the Dolphins keeper came to far out of the net, finishing a shot in right back side of the net.

With a comfortable cushion of five goals, Clarkson tacked on one goal early in the second half before pulling back on offense. Freshman Hannah Letourneau finished off a pass from Sarah Duhaime at 48:30 to complete the Clarkson scoring.

The Golden Knights finished with a 28-9 edge in shots and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks. Elyse Green started in net for Clarkson, making one save in the first half before being relieved by Hannah Wendling for the second half. Wendling stopped all four shots that were on the goal for Clarkson. Meaghan Cleary was busy in the Dolphins end, making 10 saves.
