2018 Clarkson Women's Soccer Preview

Fresh off its first post-season appearance in the Liberty League playoffs, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team is looking for more this fall as the Golden Knights hope to make a steady climb in the standings in 2018.

The Green and Gold will open the 2018 season at home in the annual North Country Classic, facing Mount St. Vincent on Friday at 4:30 pm and then the Wentworth Institute of Technology at 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Key Returners: The Golden Knights lost two of their top three scorers to graduation, but Liberty League Second-Team All-Star Camryn Careccia is back to lead the team's offense. The junior was chosen as a USC Division III All-East Third-Team honoree for her performance in 2017, scoring 17 points on eight goals and an assist, including seven points in conference games. While she may not have figured in the scoring column often with just a single assist last year, junior Giulia Mahoney was noticed by the league's coaches for her consistent play in the midfield, earning Liberty League All-Star honor as well. Elyse Green, another junior and also a Liberty League All-Star, played every second of the 2017 in goal for the Golden Knights, making 92 saves and helping the Green and Gold record six shutouts.

Beyond the trio of all-stars, the Golden Knights have plenty of starters returning for 2018. Sophomore Ashley Abel played more minutes in the field than any other Clarkson player last year, sitting out for all of eight minutes. She, Mahoney and Green were the only three players to start all 18 contests last year. Senior Victoria Goudreau (15 starts), Megan Murphy (16 starts) and Sarah Duhaime (13 starts) also were regulars for the Knights who are back to provide stability at their respective positions. Seniors Summer Gillespie and Mia Fiacchi also have made an impact for the Knights the last three years, whether as starters or substitutes. Gillespie is Clarkson's leading active scorer with 25 points and a solid season could see her jump into the Golden Knights' top 10 all-time in scoring.

Key Newcomers: Third-year head coach Kelsey Yam added seven first-year student-athletes to the roster for 2018 and all should have an opportunity to play at some point this season. Both Emma Harrigan (defense) and Dana Andreaggi (midfield/forward) should compete for ample field time with the veterans and make an immediate impact for the Knights.
