Clarkson Faces Stern Challenge in Central NY

Powered by the top line in the nation and boasting the most prolific offense in Division I, Clarkson University returns to ECAC Hockey play traveling to Central NY for its toughest league road trip of the season. Ranked 3rd in the country, the Golden Knights, guided by 11th-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, will face a rematch of last year's ECAC Hockey and NCAA Tournament Championship games when they battle Colgate in Hamilton, NY on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Knights will take on 7th-ranked Cornell on Saturday at Lynah Rink in Ithaca at 3:00 p.m.

Coming off a sweep of WCHA power Minnesota Duluth this past weekend at Cheel Arena, two-time defending National Champion Clarkson stands at 12-2 overall and 3-1 in ECAC hockey. The Green and Gold are currently in sixth place in the conference with six points, four points shy of the top spot and with two games in hand on league-leader Princeton.

After a rare loss in ECAC Hockey play, a 5-1 setback at Yale on November 17, Clarkson came back with a pair of solid efforts in the non-league sweep of UMD this past weekend at Cheel, winning 4-1 and 4-2.

In October of last year, the Raiders handed Clarkson its first loss of the season, 4-3 in overtime at Cheel. During the second half of the 2017-18 season, Clarkson won all three matchups, including the ECAC Championship at Cheel and the NCAA Championship in Minnesota. The Knights took down the Raiders 3-0 in the ECAC Championship and then won a 2-1 overtime thriller to capture their third National Championship. The Golden Knights are 9-4-2 on the road against Colgate and have not lost in Hamilton since December of 2010. Loren Gabel leads the way offensively with a team-high 11 points on six goals and five assists against the Raiders. Elizabeth Giguere, who scored the overtime game-winner in the National Championship game, has seven points on two goals and five assists.

Series vs. Cornell

Clarkson battled Cornell in October of last year and took down the 9th-ranked Big Red 6-0 in Cheel. The season series then shifted to Lynah Rink where the Knights escaped 4-3 in overtime. The Raiders are 3-1 in Hamilton, with their lone home loss coming against former Golden Knight goaltender Jenna Brenneman, and Penn State (4-2) on September 29.  In their last action before the break, the Raiders lost to Princeton (6-0) and tied Quinnipiac (3-3) to close out a six-game road trip.

Scouting Cornell
The 7th-ranked Big Red enter the weekend 6-1-4 overall and 4-1-1 in the ECAC.  Cornell, 3-0 at Lynah Rink, will play its first home game in 35 days when it hosts St. Lawrence on Friday. The Big Red defeated (5-2) and tied (3-3) Robert Morris this past weekend in Pennsylvania to close out an eight-game road trip.
