Late Comeback Attempt Comes Up Short as Vassar Downs Knights, 67-55

Potsdam, NY – Despite full court pressure in the fourth quarter that put the game within reach, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team couldn't complete its comeback against Vassar College, as the Golden Knights dropped a 67-55 decision to the Brewers on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 8-10 overall and 3-8 in the Liberty League, while Vassar advanced its mark to 12-6 and 7-4 in conference games. Clarkson hits the road next weekend, heading to Western New York to take on RIT and William Smith.

Although it appeared some second quarter struggles would doom the Knights to a lopsided loss, Clarkson employed plenty of pressure, even in the half court, and finally started to bury key shots and convert off turnovers. Within eight in the final minutes, however, Vassar was able to make enough free throws and keep the Knights from making any shots down the stretch.

Both teams came out hot on offense with both teams shooting well above 60.0% from the field on the first series of possessions. However, Vassar stayed hot while Clarkson stumbled, missing five straight shots before Hannah Earl converted on a layup late in the quarter. Earl's make, though, was the last make that the Knights would get for well over 10 minutes. Clarkson finally ended an 0-for-18 streak from the field on Devin Sorell's layup with just four seconds left in the second quarter. The only thing that kept the game from getting truly out of hand was Vassar's similar struggles. The Brewers went 10-for-16 from the field in the first quarter, but went quiet in the second, finally getting a layup on an uncontested layup off the fastbreak. Vassar's first basket in the half court didn't come until more than seven minutes had expired from the clock in the second quarter.

After its hot start, Clarkson finished just 6-for-31 from the field and was without a make from beyond the 3-point arc, while Vassar finished at 45.2% (14-for-31) with a trio of 3-pointers.

Although Clarkson found more offense in the third, the Brewers still outscored the Knights in the period and increased the margin to as many as 25 points before it finally settled at 22 through 30 minutes. IN the fourth, however, the Knights made a furious comeback almost entirely without the benefit of 3-pointers. After a 3-pointer from Samarah Cook at the 4:53 mark put Vassar up by 21 (61-40), the Knights were able to get into the paint on several possessions and pulled to within 13. A Raeanna Dunn 3-pointer with 2:48 reduced the deficit to 12 and a minute later the Knights pulled to within single digits when Madison Shea scored on a layup in the paint with 1:15 to go. Clarkson's efforts from the 3-point line came up short in the final minute, however, and Vassar hit four free throws in the waning moments to clinch the win.

Three players finished in double figures for Clarkson, led by freshman Olivia Marshall, who tallied a collegiate-high 16 points and also added eight rebounds. Both Devin Sorell and Madison Shea chipped in 12 points for the Knights. For Vassar, Ariella Rosenthal scored 16 points and produced seven rebounds, while Nicole Teta added 12 points coming off the bench.

Clarkson, the leading 3-point shooting team in the conference by volume, shot just 1-for-11 from the perimeter, while Vassar, the leading 3-point shooting team in the Liberty League by percentage, went 7-for-13 (53.8%).
