Clarkson Hosts SUNY Canton in Rematch

PirroDom2016a2

Men's Baseball | 4/25/2017 12:05:00 PM

With just one week left in the regular season, the Clarkson University Baseball team will host SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon in Jack Phillips Stadium.

Clarkson is 14-15 overall on the season and is 11-7 in the Liberty League. With just five games remaining in the regular season and a possible playoff appearance on the horizon, a few Golden Knights are moving up the leaderboards in the Clarkson history books.

Ted Wilson has his fingerprints all over the all-time pitching leaders at Clarkson. Wilson leads Clarkson with a 2.80 ERA, which is just below his career ERA of 2.92. That is the third lowest mark among Clarkson pitchers with at least 75 career innings pitched. He is 5-0 this season, giving him 13 wins in his career which is eighth all-time. His 5-0 record is also the most wins without a loss in a single season since Will Coleman had the same record in the 2015 season.

Offensively, Chris Miller and Dom Pirro have moved into the top 10 at Clarkson in a variety of categories. Miller is tied for the team lead with nine doubles and has 38 for his career, the fourth highest total for a Golden Knight. Miller also has 136 hits and 95 runs scored in his career and needs seven more in each category to move into the top ten. Miller is also 14th all time in batting average (.337) and 11th in slugging percentage (.489). Pirro leads the team with three home runs, giving him nine for his career. He is tied for seventh right now in the Clarkson all-time leaderboard and can become only the sixth Clarkson player with ten career home runs with one more blast.

The freshmen class for Clarkson has been one of the strongest in recent memory. Joe Fraser and Cam Bando have 31 hits apiece to pace the rookie hitters on Clarkson. The pair are tied for sixth in hits by freshmen since the 2010 season. They also have 10 extra base hits each, which trails just Brad Pearson's 11 in the 2016 season, Dan Lenney's 12 in the 2011 season, and John Coleman's 13 in the 2012 season for the highest rookie total in the same span. Overall, the class has produced 109 hits so far which is the highest combined total since the 2010 season. Nate Burns is also tied for seventh all-time with three saves. Burns needs one more save this season to move into a tie for fourth all-time at Clarkson, as well as tying current teammate Will Coleman for the most in a rookie campaign.

Canton comes into the matchup with a 6-23 record and is 2-12 in Empire 8 play. However, one of those wins was a 10-7 victory over Clarkson earlier in the season. Clarkson led 3-0 early in that game, but nine Canton runs in the top of the fourth gave the Kangaroos an insurmountable lead. Seth Douglas had two hits and four RBI's in that matchup, and is Canton's second leading hitter with a .352 batting average. Travis Schindler leads the Kangaroos with 40 hits and a .381 batting average, while Wilson Matos has a team high 29 runs batted in. Canton used five pitchers in the game, including Austin Lamay. Lamay closed out the game to earn the save and has a team best 2.31 ERA.

First pitch for the matchup is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Wednesday afternoon in Jack Phillips Stadium.
