CU Baseball Preview - vs St. Lawrence (4/22-4/23)

Local rivals will battle this weekend as the Clarkson University Baseball team will play a four game set against St. Lawrence. The two teams will start with a doubleheader in Canton on Saturday afternoon before finishing with two more games in Potsdam on Sunday afternoon.

Clarkson is 12-13 overall on the season and its 9-5 Liberty League record puts the Golden Knights in second place in the league. In conference games, only RIT has been a better pitching team than Clarkson as Clarkson has a 3.87 ERA. Ted Wilson and Mike Bubniak have the best individual ERAs for Clarkson, as Wilson is at 3.08, fifth in the Liberty League, and Bubniak is at 3.81, tied for ninth. The pair improves to 2.52 and 2.02 respectively when pitching against conference foes. Andrew Smith leads Clarkson with 24 strikeouts and Ryan Riley is second with 20. Riley has two saves which trails only Nate Burns' three for the team lead. In a four game sweep of Bard last weekend, Riley, Rory Corcoran, Smith, and Bubniak all notched wins while Riley and Burns each had a save. Riley and Mark Connor had losses in a midweek sweep at Oswego.

Dom Pirro continues to lead Clarkson in batting average (.376), on-base percentage (.434), and slugging percentage (.559). Pirro is second in the conference in hits with 35 and tied for second in runs batted in with 20. Joe Fraser is tied for third in doubles with eight while classmate Cam Bando is tied for eighth in hits with 28 and fifth in triples with two. Fraser (.343) and Bando (.326) are second and third on the team in batting average and Ben Knauf is the other Clarkson hitter above .300 at .319. Chris Miller and Brad Pearson are second and third on the team in runs scored as the pair have crossed the plate 18 and 17 times respectively. Miller also only trails Fraser in doubles as Miller has seven of his own and leads the team with 12 walks.

St. Lawrence is only 8-11 overall, but the Saints' 6-4 record in the conference has them in a tie for third in the Liberty League standings. St. Lawrence started just 2-4 in the league, but a four game sweep of Skidmore has put the Saints right back in the hunt for a playoff spot. Adam Reichel and Brendon Frank lead the team with 26 hits each, but Michael LeFevre has a team high .396 batting average. Reichel has a team high .653 slugging percentage, nine doubles, three triples, and is tied for the team lead with Devin Robson with a pair of home runs. Sam Downes leads St. Lawrence with 26.0 innings pitched, while Caleb Clarke, Emmett Dunn, and Reichel have all thrown at least 20 innings. Downes has a team best 2.77 ERA and has the only two St. Lawrence complete games.

Clarkson did not face St. Lawrence in the 2016 season, but in the 2015 season Clarkson took three out of four games from the Saints. That broke a streak of three straight years that St. Lawrence had taken at least three of the four games between the two teams.

The first doubleheader will start with a 1:00 pm first pitch on Saturday in Canton and before a noon start on Sunday in Potsdam.
