Seventh-Ranked Whitewater Downs Knights 3-1

Winter Haven, FL – For the second straight day the Clarkson University Baseball team's bats were silenced by a solid pitching performance as the Golden Knights could only push across a single run in their 3-1 loss to seventh-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater at Chain O' Lakes Stadium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-4 on their spring trip and will finish things off with a doubleheader against Hamilton College on Wednesday before returning to New York. Wisconsin-Whitewater improved to 8-1 on the season.

Despite having played 45 innings in the previous three days, the Golden Knights pitching staff performed well against the seventh-ranked Warhawks, allowing just five hits and two walks in the game. Junior Andrew Smith was tapped for just his second career start and allowed just five hits over six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) before being relieved in the seventh. Whitewater scored twice off Smith in the top of the second inning to get things going. Will Helbing doubled and was followed by a Jordan Kuczynski walk. Mike Aiello then singled to plate Helbing and Kuczynski came around to score when the throw from the outfield got away.

Clarkson responded with a run in the bottom of the third to cut the Warhawks lead in half. Connor Dietrich walked and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. He then headed for third on a Mike Bonk single before rushing home on a wild pitch. Whitewater scored an insurance run in the top of the fifth as Matt Wary singled, advanced to second and third on the same wild pitch, and then finished the circuit by scoring on another wild pitch.

Clarkson had the middle of its order up in the bottom of the ninth, but the Knights were retired in order despite some loud outs.

Smith finished with five strikeouts in six innings of work before Ted Wilson and Dom Pirro combined to throw three hitless innings. Pirro struck out a pair in the ninth during his one inning of work. Only Bonk and Brad Pearson recorded a hit in the game.

For Whitewater, Austin Jones went the distance, pitching to contact most of the way. He struck out only two in nine innings, but also allowed only two hits and two walks.
