Knights Win 10th in Liberty League, Take Down SLU 57-44

Potsdam, NY – A late comeback was thwarted by a Molly Stewart 3-pointer with a minute to go to help the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team capture a 57-44 victory over St. Lawrence Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the Liberty League, inching closer to a conference playoff berth, while St. Lawrence fell to 9-14 overall and 6-9 in conference games.

Clarkson led throughout the first quarter, though St. Lawrence stayed with the Knights in the first five-plus minutes and tied the game at 10-10. The final four minutes of the frame were all Clarkson, as the Knights ended the half on a 9-0 run in the final 3:46 for a 19-10 advantage at the first break. The scoring occurred much slower in the second quarter, with the Saints breaking through three minutes in and the Knights finally getting on the scoreboard at the 5:14 mark after a Madison Shea jumper. St. Lawrence pulled to within four after a Jenny Scudder free throw (23-19), but Clarkson doubled up its second quarter points in the final minute thanks to a Devin Sorell layup and a Tricia Loso steal and layup made it 27-19.

The Golden Knights limited their miscues and forced plenty on the part of St. Lawrence in the opening half, taking advantage of the Saints' turnovers to the tune of 15 points. The Saints had committed just 19 turnovers over the previous three games before giving up the ball 11 times in the first half.

The third quarter began with Clarkson pushing its advantage to double figures thanks to a 10-2 run in the first four-plus minutes, capped off by a steal from Stephanie Grobe that resulted in a lay in by Alyssia Marsal (37-21, 5:40). A 3-pointer by St. Lawrence's Kaelyn Kohlasch finally halted the Clarkson streak but the Knights ended the quarter up by 10 (41-31).

Devin Sorell banged home a 3-pointer to open the fourth and Clarkson again led by double digits for most of the period. It wasn't until the 2:21 mark that a 3-pointer by Kohlasch again brought the Saints within nine, and though St. Lawrence did trim the margin to seven, Stewart's 3-pointer from the corner put Clarkson up by 12 with a minute to go, more than enough for the Knights to cruise to the win.

Junior Madison Shea scored a game-high 14 points while Sorell added 13 points, and Stephanie Grobe chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Alyssia Marsal also had eight points and eight boards before fouling out. For St. Lawrence, Caroline Dalton came close to a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. Kohlasch finished with 11 points and Meghan Hynes tossed in 10 for the Saints.
