Clarkson Opens New Year With Tuesday Game vs Canisius

After a lengthy, but well deserved 23-day break, the Golden Knights are looking to pick up where they left off as Clarkson University Hockey closed out the 2017 portion of the schedule having established itself as one of the best teams in the country through the season's first half. Clarkson will host Canisius College in its final non-league contest of the regular season Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. start at Cheel Arena, and then resume ECAC Hockey play with the road trip to NY's Capital District to battle Union and Rensselaer on January 12-13.
 
Youth Hockey Night:
Youth hockey players, ages 16 and under, will receive a complimentary General Admission ticket when they wear their youth hockey jerseys to the Men's Game vs. Canisius at 7 pm.

Guided by seventh-year head coach Casey Jones and assistant Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, Clarkson was ranked fourth in the national polls with the second most victories in the country and skated into the exam/holiday break with the second longest win streak in Division I.  Led by senior captain Nic Pierog and assistants, senior Brett Gervais and sophomore Devin Brosseau, the Knights put up a 15-3-1 overall record for their best start since 1981-82 and go into the New Year with a first-place 8-0-0 ECAC Hockey mark for their best start ever in league play.

The Green and Gold closed out 2017 with a home-and-home sweep of archrival St. Lawrence to extend their winning streak to 11 games.  Clarkson won its sixth game of the season at Cheel Arena with a 3-1 victory over the Saints on December 8. The Knights followed the next night with a 4-2 triumph at St. Lawrence for their eighth consecutive win on the road.

• Clarkson outscored the opponents 63-27 through the first 19 games for the second best scoring margin in the NCAA at 1.89. The Knights boasted the best defense in the country, allowing only 1.42 goals per game, and held the fourth-rated offense, scoring 3.32 goals per game. Specialty teams contribution was a big factor in Clarkson's first-half success as the Green and Gold were tops in the country in combined play. The Knights' power play was number one, clicking at 30.6% (26-85), including a phenomenal rate of 39% (21-54) during the 11-game win streak. Clarkson was nearly as good shorthanded, shutting down 87.4% (76-87) of the opponents' man-advantage opportunities, for the fourth-rated penalty-killing unit in Division 1.
• Headlining the Knights' prolific offense were two of the top lines in the nation. Clarkson's Sophomore Line, centered by Nico Sturm with left wing Devin Brosseau and right wing Sheldon Rempal, accounted for 36% of the team's scoring. The Freshman Line, centered by Josh Dickinson with left wing Kevin Charyszyn and right wing Jack Jacome, supplied 20% of the Green and Gold's offense.
• Rempal, Brosseau and Sturm rated one, two, and three on the Clarkson scoring charts. The leading goal scorer in the country, Rempal has tallied 16 goals and 25 points and shares the national lead in game-winning goals with four. Brosseau has 21 points, including a team-high 17 assists, fourth most in Division 1. Clarkson's top center at the faceoff circle, Sturm posts 17 points (6-11) and a team-high +14 plus/minus rating.
• Tied for the seventh most points by a Division I rookie, Jacome has 15 points, including 13 assists, the third most by a freshman. Dickinson is tied for the national lead in goals by a freshman with 10 tallies to go along with four assists. Charyszyn has three goals and four assists.
• A pair of NHL Draft picks, seniors Terrance Amorosa and Kelly Summers provides Clarkson with one of the best defensive pairings in the country. Both have produced 15 points from the blueline. All four of Amorosa's goal have come on the power play. He holds a +11 plus/minus rating. Summers leads the team in blocks (30) and has recorded 13 assists and a +9 rating.
• Backstopping the Knights in goal is sophomore Jake Kielly, who rates as one of the best goaltenders in the country. Kielly, who has played every minute in the Clarkson crease, owned the best goals against average (1.42) in the nation, was tied for second in save percentage (.947), tied for most wins (15) and led the country in shutouts (5).
• Clarkson picked up its first win in the series against Canisius one month ago, skating to a 5-1 victory over the Golden Griffins at the Harbor Center in Western NY on December 2. The Knights had gone winless (0-1-3) in the previous four meetings. The series started in late November of 2008 at Cheel Arena with Canisius skating to a 4-3 overtime victory and a 4-4 tie at Cheel Arena.
• Canisius, which lost 6-2 at Cornell on Saturday, posts a 10-6-1 overall record and a first place 10-4 Atlantic Hockey mark.
