CU Women's Hoops Preview - at Rensselaer/Union (1/6-7)

Starting 2017 with a 17-point victory over St. Lawrence was exactly what the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team was hoping for, and the Golden Knights are looking to continue their unbeaten ways in the Liberty League when they take on Rensselaer and Union this weekend in the Capitol District.

Seven of the nine Liberty League members have already started the conference slate, but only two of those seven are without a loss, with the Golden Knights one of the two. Clarkson is 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League, while Friday's opponent, Rensselaer, enters the game with a record of 5-6 overall and 0-2 in conference games. Union awaits on Saturday, and the Dutchwomen split their first round of games and are 5-5 and 1-1 on the campaign.

Clarkson is just 20-48 all-time against Rensselaer and only 9-39 versus Union, but the Golden Knights have split the season series with each team in the last two years. Clarkson's defense is doing enough to tally wins, allowing only 55.6 points per game (second in the Liberty League) and a turnover margin of +5.70 (first in the Liberty League). Junior Devin Sorell leads the team with 11.1 points per game, just ahead of senior Stephanie Grobe's 11.0 points per contest. Grobe is also chipping in 5.2 rebounds per game. Junior Madison Shea is still contributing across the board with 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.1 steals per game, with the latter two categories ranking second and first, respectively, in the Liberty League. Freshman Molly Stewart is also chipping in 8.2 points per game. A key to Clarkson's success this weekend could be the return of senior Alyssia Marsal, who missed the last four contests. Marsal was playing well through the first six games of the year, averaging 8.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Classmate Kathleen Coloney more than held her own in Marsal's absence, however, averaging 9.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over her last three starts.

Rensselaer relies on eight players heavily in its lineup, but none of those eight spend more than 27 minutes on the court per game.  Sam Krumbhaar leads the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game despite averaging just 20.1 minutes per contest. Elizabeth Eckhardt is the only other player in double figures, averaging 10.0 ppg, but several others do their part. LaKissa Martin averages 7.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while Ines Ortea matches that scoring output and also chips in 4.3 rebounds per game. Shaina Iton is among the top five in the Liberty League in rebounding (8.6 rpg) and blocked shots (1.4 bps) and also tosses in 6.3 points per contest, while Lauren Young leads the league in assists (4.2 apg) and also averages 6.8 points per game. Overall, Rensselaer leads the conference in offensive rebounds, getting 15.3 second chances per game.

Union is the only team in the conference allowing fewer points than the Golden Knights, giving up just 53.6 ppg. Senior Erin Lyons ranks eighth in the league in scoring at 12.3 points per game and also averages 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. She is aided by several other players, with Nicole Conley producing 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.1 steals and a league-leading 1.9 blocks per game. Natalie Leone is averaging 9.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, but has appeared in only five contests, while Sophie Borg is also contributing 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, having played in only six games. Jenni Barra provides 7.7 points and 2.4 assists per game, while Abby Katz averages 6.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
