CU Softball Extends Winning Streak to Double Digits

Some say winning can become a habit and it certainly appears that way for the Clarkson University Softball team as the Golden Knights took two more wins today to run their winning streak to 10 straight games. Clarkson is now 10-4 on the season.

In the early game against UMass-Boston, Clarkson jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first and that was enough for pitcher Katie Pelton. In the first, Sara Armstrong was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a stolen base. Three consecutive singles by Jamie Bridge, Chelsea Elliott, and Liz Caggiano brought two runs home, with Elliott and Caggiano picking up RBI's.

Clarkson added one more run in the second inning. After Pelton reached on an error, Summer Lancette got a bunt single, moving Pelton to second. After Pelton was erased by a fielder's choice, Lancette and Rae Dunn completed a double steal to move the pair to third and second respectively. Amstrong then followed with a long flyout to allow Lancette to tag up and score.

That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh. An error and two singles for UMass-Boston brought one run home and sent the winning run to the plate with two outs. Pelton was able to induce a groundout to Armstrong though to send Clarkson home 3-1 winners.

Many times, when a team does not have a hit in first four innings, they can expect to find themselves behind. However, opportunistic baserunning and a strong pitching performance allowed Clarkson to hold a 1-0 lead over Lasell through four innings until the offense finally came to life.

That one run came in the top of the first. Dunn opened the game with a walk, and then stole both second and third base on consecutive pitches. After Armstrong walked, she took off for second base. Lasell threw down to second base and caught Armstrong in a pickle, allowing Dunn to scamper home before Armstrong was tagged out.

Lasell was shut down by freshman pitcher Meg Tully. She pitched five scoreless innings to earn her first collegiate victory. Clarkson gave her some more support in the fifth inning. Karlie Neuhausser and Caitlin Foley both hit one out singles to break up Lasell's no-hitter. Dunn then followed with a deep triple to right center to score both runners and break the game open. Armstrong then roped a hit through the left side to score Dunn for the final run of the game. Maggie Stark came in and pitched the final two innings to close the door and run the winning streak to double digits.

The Green and Gold will finish out its Florida trip with games against Fredonia State and Westfield University tomorrow morning.
