CU Women's Hoops Advances to NCAA Tournament in 65-63 Thriller Over RIT

Potsdam, NY – Senior Ashley Loggins cut hard to her right even with a pick on her left and slashed her way to the basket for a layup with 2.3 seconds remaining to lift the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 65-63 victory over RIT in the Liberty League Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

With the win, the Golden Knights advance to their first NCAA Tournament since 1989, and become the first regular-season Liberty League champion to win the post-season title as well since 2006 (William Smith). Five two seeds, three number-three seeds and a four seed had claimed the conference championship over the last nine seasons. Clarkson improved to 22-5 on the season and awaits its spot in the NCAA Tournament bracket. RIT, 20-7 overall, will have to hope for an at-large bid to advance to the tournament.

Supported by a raucous crowd from the get-go, Clarkson made its first six shots of the game and raced out to a 14-3 lead in the first three and a half minutes. Despite an RIT timeout that looked to unnerve the Knights, Clarkson continued to bury shot after shot in the first quarter, making 11 of its first 13 attempts from the floor in the quarter to take a 26-15 lead after 10 minutes. The small break between periods did nothing to slow down Clarkson either, as the team employed full court pressure to stymie the Tigers as RIT committed five turnovers in the first two-plus minutes of the second quarter, allowing Clarkson to rattle off 11 straight points and push its advantage beyond 20 (37-15). The Tigers would finally break their drought, but Clarkson was able to maintain its 20-point advantage and carried that lead into the locker room (48-28).

Clarkson shot 19-for-30 (63.3%) in the first half overall and 5-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc, while RIT went 12-for-30 (40.0%) and 2-for-8 from distance (25.0%). Ashley Loggins scored 19 points in the first half, going 7-for-11 from the floor, and Devin Sorell produced 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting with four 3-pointers, missing only a last second 3-pointer from the corner as the half was coming to a close. Stephanie Grobe also tossed in nine points. For the Tigers, Amanda Olsen made four of her seven attempts from the floor for eight points and Jessica Glaz contributed seven points.

In the third quarter, Clarkson's lead nearly evaporated entirely as the Golden Knights went cold and RIT went to the interior to get points. Clarkson was up by 22 in the early going, but RIT pulled back to within four (57-53) before the Knights closed the period out with a basket to take a 59-53 lead through 30 minutes.

RIT outscored Clarkson 25-11 in the third quarter to make the game interesting, and the Tigers tied the game twice in the waning moments (61-61, 63-63) as neither team could muster much on offense in the fourth quarter. The key for the Knights final possession wasn't its shooting, but their defense and rebounding. In the final minute, Alyssia Marsal tipped a ball for a turnover after an RIT defensive rebound, and following a miss from Stephanie Grobe, Madison Shea ducked out of the paint with an offensive board to allow the Knights to hold for one last shot. With 20 seconds to go, Clarkson inbounded the ball and its guard eliminated 11 seconds from the clock before the ball was given to Loggins near the 3-point line. Marsal came across the paint to provide a screen near the elbow at the top of the paint, but Loggins juked once and went right, eluding two defenders for a fairly open look at the rim. The ball fell through with 2.3 seconds to go to give Clarkson a 65-63 lead. After RIT advanced the ball with a 30-second timeout, the inbounder threw the ball off the backboard and it bounced out to the 3-point line about 28 feet from the basket. The ball ricocheted its way into Loggins' hand and the Knights came away the win.

Loggins shot 10-for-20 from the floor for a game-high 26 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Devin Sorell closed out the game with 18 points and Stephanie Grobe also chipped in 15 points. For RIT, Amanda Olsen was 8-for-14 from the field for 17 points, while Jessica Glaz and Tara Lynch each added in nine points. Glaz also had nine rebounds and four steals.
