CU Volleyball Tied for First in Liberty League After Sweeps on Saturday

Canton, NY – Few would have thought after a five-set match against Oswego State on Tuesday that the Clarkson University Volleyball team was poised to cruise through its Liberty League weekend, but the Golden Knights did just that with two more sweeps of Union and Skidmore on Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium on the campus of St. Lawrence University.

The Golden Knights defeated Union in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) and then swept Skidmore in three as well (25-16, 25-23, 25-19) to improve to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Liberty League. That made four straight sweeps over the weekend, and Clarkson allowed just an average of 17.83 points per set, with no opponent reaching 20 points per set.

In the first set against Union, many of Clarkson's points came on errors by the Dutchwomen, but that was enough to get things going for the Knights as Katrina Lane and Sophia Holms each found a groove on offense to push the Knights ahead. Union was never particularly far behind in the set, trailing just 19-16 late, but a pair of kills from Rachael Aird, including the set's final point, finishing off the Dutchwomen by eight.

With the score tied in the second set at 13-13, freshman Maddie Bredehoeft came off the bench and provided an immediate spark recording four kills in a stretch of six total points to jumpstart the Clarkson cause. That turned a tie into an eight point and the Knights repeated their 25-17 win with back-to-back kills from Holms to end the set.

In what proved to be the final set, Clarkson raced out to an early advantage (14-9), but the Dutchwomen scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead (16-15). As it happened in the first two sets, though, Clarkson found another gear down the stretch, scoring the final six points thanks to two kills from Holms and four straight errors by Union.

Clarkson produced its most diverse offense of the year with five players recording at least eight kills, but none scoring more than nine. Rachael Aird, Holms, and Lane each scored nine kills, while Bredehoeft and Rachel Reusch each produced eight while hitting .500 or better. Aird added four total blocks, Holms contributed a match-high 17 digs, and Lane added three blocks and a pair of aces. Jillian Saenz also tossed in three aces, eight digs and 37 assists, while Kate Isaksen chipped in 13 digs. For the Dutchwomen, Ally VanDoren scored 14 kills, but the rest of Union's team combined only matched that total. Amanda Price had 22 assists while Kat Moeller and Brianne Hallock had 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

Skidmore put forth a solid effort on defense against the Golden Knights as Clarkson hit just .135 in the match, but the Knights matched that energy by forcing the Thoroughbreds to hit negative for the match with good production on the back row and 12 blocks up front.

For the majority of the first set, it seemed like it was just a matter of time before Clarkson would pull away as the Knights were having little trouble hitting over top the Skidmore block, and it finished that way with Clarkson up by nine points. The next two sets were a different story, however, as Skidmore was able to hang around and make the Knights hit to the outside lines. Skidmore rallied to take a one-point lead late in the second set (22-21), but Clarkson tied the set on a kill by Katrina Lane before Skidmore made three unforced errors to give the Knights the win. The third set looked a lot like the first as Clarkson had a seven-point lead late (17-10) and looked prepared to cruise from there. The Thoroughbreds took got kills from Katy Ehnstrom and took advantage of errors by the Knights to get back into the set (18-17), but Clarkson would never let Skidmore pull even. Up by just one (20-19), Clarkson's block re-emerged down the stretch, as Aird produced a solo block, Rachel Reusch had two block assists and both Maddie Bredehoeft and Jillian Saenz chipped in a block assist to finish things off 25-19.

Lane finished with her fourth double-double of the season on 12 kills and 14 digs, while Aird produced nine kills and five total blocks (three solo, two block assists). Reusch struck for eight kills and seven total blocks (two solo, five block assists) and Kate Isaksen led the defense with 23 digs. Jillian Saenz ran the offense to the tune of 32 assists. For Skidmore, Katy Ehnstrom scored seven kills and a pair of solo blocks while Marcela Familiar had 21 digs. Bailey Hutchins and Lauren Wolters each had 10 assists and two aces, with Hutchins also contributing 10 digs and five kills.
