Second Half Attack Not Enough as CU Women's Soccer Falls to RPI

A second half barrage of shots was not enough as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team fell to visiting RPI 1-0 on Friday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson is now 4-9-0 on the season and 0-5-0 in the Liberty League while RPI improves to 10-3-0 and 2-2-0 in the Liberty League.

In an even first half, Rensselaer was able to take advantage of one of the few offensive chances to take the lead. The Engineers scored when Emily Kaplan found space on the right wing and sent a cross along the ground and into the Clarkson box. The ball squirted through to Kensey Waterman who hit a one-time shot into the back of the goal.

With the Golden Knights still trailing at halftime, Clarkson turned up the pressure to tie the game. The Green and Gold took nine shots in the second half, including four on goal, while holding RPI without a shot. The best chance came when Summer Gillespie got free in the RPI box and had the goalkeeper beat with a high shot, but the ball just caught the bottom of the crossbar and stayed out of the goal. Clarkson was unable to come any closer before the final whistle blew.

The Golden Knights finished with a 13-4 advantage in shots overall, with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson took all five of the game's corner kicks. Elyse Green made one save for Clarkson while Joey Lyons had six stops for RPI.

Clarkson's next game will be on Saturday at 2:00 pm when Union comes to town.
