CU Women's Basketball Preview - vs. Bard/Vassar (1/8-9)

Things could have gone better for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team this past weekend as the team suffered a pair of losses on the road to start the Liberty League campaign, but the Golden Knights are back in Alumni Gymnasium this weekend with hopes of picking up their first conference wins of the season when the team hosts Bard and Vassar.

The Golden Knights (5-4 overall, 0-2 Liberty League) had just one home game in the first half of the year, and that contest took place at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall as the backboards at Alumni Gym were being replaced.

Senior Ashley Loggins enjoyed her second career 30-point game on Saturday and is once again among the league leaders in scoring at 14.9 points per game (sixth) while also ranking third in rebounding (10.0 rpg) and first in steals (4.4 spg). Devin Sorell had a tough weekend in regards to shooting, but she still is fourth in the conference in scoring at 15.4 ppg and has maintained her lead in 3-pointers made (23) and free throw percentage (83.9%). Overall, Clarkson is getting the majority of its points from its starters, as the first five account for 52.22 points per game and the bench is contributing 8.0 points per game.

Clarkson is 7-1 overall against the Raptors (5-6, 0-2) but the Knights have won five straight by an average of 21 points per contest including a pair of lopsided victories last season. While the Knights get the majority of their points from the five starters, Bard receives 66.9% of its points (390 of 583) from its two seniors Tytravia Riley and Bianka Bell, with the two ranking first and second in the conference in scoring average. Riley is averaging 18.5 points and 17.9 rebounds per game to go along with 3.0 steals per contest (second in the conference), while Bell is producing 16.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and rarely comes off the court at 39.1 minutes per contest. Sophomore Lexi Abingbade also kicks in 10 rebounds per contest. No other player besides Riley or Bell is averaging more than five points per game. The Raptors are struggling from the floor, shooting just 29.9% overall and 22.6% from the 3-point line, but they are helped considerably by 19.8 offensive rebounds per game.

The Golden Knights swept last year's series against the Brewers (2-6, 0-0) with a 23-point win in Poughkeepsie and an 11-point overtime victory in Potsdam to even the all-time record against Vassar at 15-15. Sophomore Ariella Rosenthal is eighth in the league with 13.1 points per game and is also kicking in 5.3 rebounds per contest, while senior Caitlin Drakeley is in the top 15 in both scoring (11.8 ppg, 13th) and rebounding (6.9 rpg, 10th). Samarah Cook has averaged nine points per game through six of the team's eight contests and senior Rose Serafini has been tough on defense on the block with a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game to go along with 7.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Senior guard Alex Moon is also in the top five in the league in assists with 3.4 per game.
