Slow Start Leads to CU Women's Hoops Loss at RPI

Troy, NY - It took nearly three quarters for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to break out of its offensive slump against Rensselaer, and the team's scoring barrage in the final 10 minutes was not enough to overcome the deficit in the Golden Knights 63-47 loss to the Engineers on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer moved to 5-6 and 1-1. Clarkson will play five straight home games starting next weekend when the team hosts Bard College and Vassar College.

Clarkson finished Saturday's game with a less than stellar run on offense against Union, and that continued into Sunday's contest. The Golden Knights took 40 shots in the first two quarters and converted on just six of them (15.0%) with no makes from beyond the 3-point arc in eight tries. Fortunately for the Knights, Rensselaer wasn't knocking its shots down either, going only 9-for-27 from the field (33.3%). The two teams combined to score just 38 points in the first half.

The third quarter found both teams finding their rhythm on offense, and Clarkson was able to pull within eight points (35-27) late in the period, but it was the fourth quarter where the teams really started scoring. The Golden Knights produced 20 points over the final 10 minutes, but the Engineers actually picked up a point in that same time frame. In fact, the two teams combined to score more points (41) in the final period than they had in the first half (38).

Ashley Loggins produced a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, also contributing three steals and a pair of blocks to the Clarkson cause. Stephanie Grobe tossed in 10 points, and so did Alyssia Marsal, who shot 5-for-7 from the floor (71.4%). For Rensselaer, Shaina Iton shot 7-for-10 from the field and came within a rebound of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. She also blocked four shots. Ashley Clough tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Elizabeth Eckhardt also scored 11 points.
