Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Sept. 6, 2015

Clarkson Falls to Rowan 3-2

A second half comeback fell just short as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Rowan on Sunday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson is now 1-2-0 on the young season while Rowan improves to 2-1-0.

The Golden Knights were the first to score on Sunday. Just two minutes in, Clarkson played a free kick to the back post. Zachary Godin was there to play the ball across the front of the goal where Tucker Wilcox knocked it in. It was the third goal in as many games for Wilcox, who has already matched the three goals he scored in each of his freshmen and sophomore campaigns.

The lead did not last very long though. In the fourth minute, Shane Kohler played a through ball to Shane Doherty who was behind the Clarkson defense. Clarkson keeper Michael King slid out to try to win the ball from Doherty, but after his tackle, the ball fell back to Doherty who was able to pass into the empty net and tie the game.

The Profs took the lead twelve minutes later. Travis Ward crossed the ball in from the left side and Vinny Ignatowicz directed it into the bottom right corner. Rowan added a third goal in the 33rd minute. It came again through Doherty who won the ball in a scramble in the box and put his shot into the roof of the net to make the score 3-1.

The score remained 3-1 heading into the second half. Clarkson did not lie down though, and got a goal back in the 51st minute. Brian Kroetz beat one defender down the right side and sped into the Rowan box. A second defender came over and tried to make a tackle, but took out Kroetz's legs, giving Clarkson a penalty kick. Godin stepped up and calmly put it to the right of a diving Rowan keeper to make the score 3-2.

The final forty minutes saw plenty of chances for both teams, but neither team found the back of the net and so when the final whistle blew, Rowan's 3-2 lead still stood.

Rowan finished with a 29-9 advantage in shots, with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Clarkson took five corner kicks to Rowan's 11. King played the first 45 minutes in goal for Clarkson and made one save with Riley McDonald taking over for the second half, making five saves. The Rowan keepers also split the game, with Kyle Dennis playing the first 45 and Grant Kelly the second 45, with Kelly making two saves.

Clarkson's next game will be next Friday when they play host to Geneseo State for a 4:00 pm game.
