Godin's Overtime Goal Lifts Clarkson to 3-2 Win

For the second straight game, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team played an overtime period. This time though, the Golden Knights came out on top with Zachary Godin's overtime goal giving Clarkson a 3-2 comeback victory over Fredonia on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson improves their record to 1-1-0 while Fredonia is still searching for their first victory and are 0-2-0.

The first half had plenty of chances, but little end result. Clarkson took 11 shots in the period, while Fredonia had six of their own, but neither team could find the back of the net.

That changed in a wild second half. Fredonia struck first in the 51st minute. Paul Reinis got into space behind the defense on the right side and played a square ball on the ground across the box. Mohamed Hussein got to it first and his shot found the goal to give the Blue Devils the lead. Fredonia added a second goal five minutes later. Fredonia earned a free kick from just outside the top of the box and Reinis stepped up to take it. His shot curled around the wall and into the top right corner of the goal to put Fredonia up 2-0.

Clarkson got a lifeline in the 61st minute. Kevin Calnan played a pass through the Fredonia defense to Tucker Wilcox who calmly lobbed the onrushing keeper to score his second goal in as many games.

The Golden Knights tied the score just three minutes later. Much like Fredonia's second goal, the second Clarkson goal came off a free kick. Wilcox's shot from a free kick was saved, but the rebound fell to Maximilian Leetz who slammed it into the back of the net to tie the game.

Neither team could score the game-winning goal in the rest of the second half or in the first period of overtime. The breakthrough for Clarkson came with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime period. Brian Kroetz found space on the right side of the field and swung in a cross to the top of the box. Godin was there to meet it and his shot rolled into the bottom right corner of the net to give Clarkson their first victory of the season.

Clarkson held a 19-15 advantage in shots and both teams took six corners apiece. Riley McDonald made six saves in the Clarkson net while Sammy Torrelli had six saves of his own for Fredonia.

Clarkson will play host to Rowan on Sunday morning at 11:00 am in the second game of the North Country Classic while Fredonia will travel to Canton to play St. Lawrence.
