Knights Swept by SLU

Canton, NY - After four scoreless frames to open Saturday's doubleheader, the St. Lawrence offense opened up on seven different pitchers to score 25 runs in the next 10 innings as the Clarkson University Baseball team fell in its Liberty League doubleheader 6-0 and 19-6 at Tom Fay Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 12-21 overall and 9-15 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence clinched a spot in the Liberty League Tournament, improving to 19-14 overall and 13-9 in conference games. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at Jack Phillips Stadium to close out the regular season.

Despite some minor hiccups, senior Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY) pitched well in the first four innings of game one, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four in that time frame. But in the fifth, a leadoff walk was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a single to put runners on the corners. Carter Franz then hit a soft single through the right side to score one and Khifer O'Connor followed with another single to make the score 2-0. A sacrifice fly from Paul Piatelli made the score 3-0 through five innings and the Saints added three more in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice bunt from Ethan Braddock and a two-run homer by Franz.

The Knights could muster just three hits in the opener, with two coming from freshman designated hitter Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) in his first two at bats. Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) put some pressure on the Saints with a single in the sixth, but St. Lawrence Joe Riley starter wiggled out of the jam, striking out two straight hitters to end the first-and-third threat.

Game two was less in doubt for the Saints as they immediately came out swinging. Clarkson starter Pete Roma (Endicott, NY) pitched well in the first inning and had the first two batters out in the bottom of the second, but back-to-back walks provided a window for Ethan Braddock, who delivered a two-run double to start the scoring in a seven-run second. The Saints added another run in the bottom of the third to take an 8-0 lead before the Clarkson bats finally woke up. The Knights jumped all over the Saints starter, Andrew Schreyack, swinging early in the count to get runners on base. In the end, Schreyack escaped the inning with just 14 pitches thrown, but the Knights scored five times. Jasek doubled in a run and Anthony Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) singled in another. Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY) drove in one with a groundout and David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) singled in a pair as well to make the score 8-5.

From that point on, however, it was all St. Lawrence. The Saints scored 11 more runs in their final five trips to the plate with Clarkson picking up just one more runon an RBI-single from John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) in the top of the ninth. Coleman finished game two 3-for-5 at the dish, and Morrissey also was 2-for-4.
