Junior defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) scored on the power play with 66 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team past Brown University 4-3 in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena on Friday night.
Wood tallied her first career game-winner, and third goal of the season, lofting in a high shot from the top of the right circle to lift the Golden Knights to their third consecutive win and first overtime triumph of the season. Sophomore Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) and senior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) earned the assists on the deciding power-play marker in the extra session.
Clarkson, which is 5-1-1 in conference play during the New Year, improves its record to 17-7-5 overall and to 11-4-2 in ECAC Hockey. With five games remaining in the regular season, the Green and Gold stand alone in third place in the league standings, one point behind Harvard in second. The Knights host Yale on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in their final regular-season home game.
After dominating a scoreless first period with a 13-2 shot advantage, the Knights got on the scoreboard early in the second frame with a pair of goals 64 seconds apart. Mercer opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 5:24, stuffing in a shot at the side of the net for her 13th tally of the season.
At 6:28, sophomore Shelby Nisbet (Wiseton, SASK) took a pass from freshman Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) at the top of the crease and slipped in her fourth goal of the season. Senior Danielle Boudreau (Whitby, ONT) also assisted.
Brown came back with a goal by Jennifer Nedow on a shot from the blueline that found its way through traffic into the back of the Clarkson net at 10:07 to get on the scoreboard. Jacquie Pierri and Alena Polenska set up the score.
The Knights answered with a power-play marker from senior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) at 12:45. Kosziwka knocked in her sixth goal of the season on shot from in front after passes from senior defensemen Boudreau and Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) to make it 3-1.
Less than three minutes later, the Bears cut the gap to one goal with a power-play tally by Samantha Woodward at 15:06 on a shot from the point. Katelyn Landry assisted.
Brown (7-10-7, 4-8-4), looking to secure a top eight position in the standings, fought back in the third to tie the game 3-3, scoring late in a man-advantage on Sarah Robson’s power-play marker at 16:20.
Clarkson dominated the overtime action with a 6-0 advantage in shots capped off by Woods game-winner.
For the game, the Knights outshot Brown 37-19. Sophomore Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT0 made 16 saves, while Katie Jamieson posted 33 stops for the Bears. Both teams were 2-of-3 on the power play.
