Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) scored a team-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds as the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team held on for a 58-49 win over SUNY Canton Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-3 on the season, their third straight victory. SUNY Canton dropped to 1-5 overall.

Both teams came out cold, but the Knights struggled mightily from beyond the 3-point arc, despite having plenty of time to shoot against Canton’s zone defense. The Kangaroos held a modest lead early on, extending it to as many as five points, but Clarkson finally solved the defense and made some shots from both the perimeter and in the paint. Junior guard Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) made four 3-pointers in the waning minutes of the half to push Clarkson’s edge to double figures.

Goldberg finished with a game-high 12 points in the opening 20 minutes while Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, NY) came off the bench to score six points in 12 minutes. Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) was big on the boards for Clarkson, grabbing seven rebounds, while Sierra Noles (Averill Park, NY) added four assists. For Canton, Heather Lottie had six points, shooting 2-for-2 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line.

In the second half, Canton crawled back to within seven points, 30-23, with a five-point run, but Clarkson quickly changed the momentum and took a double-digit lead. A 3-point play from Heather Lottie at the halfway point of the second period saw Canton pull back to within eight points, and the Kangaroos continued to hang in with the Knights, closing to as few as seven points. The Knights, however, seemed to make timely baskets to keep the ‘Roos at a safe distance. Turner made some impressive moves in the lane and when the lay ups didn’t go, she was able to get to the line and make her many free throw opportunities.

Combining for 25 points off the bench, Scanlon and Goldberg were key contributers as one stepped up in each half. Noles also finished with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.

For Canton, Heather Lottie scored 20 points in just 17 minutes to lead the Kangaroos as their only scorer in double figures.
