Knights Come Up Short in Opener at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY - A couple of late runs put the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team within striking distance, but in the end the Potsdam State Bears held off the Golden Knights' late charge for a 56-52 decision Tuesday evening at Potsdam's Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights will look to rebound from the season-opening loss this weekend in a tournament held at Lebanon Valley College.

Through the first 11 minutes of Tuesday night's game, Potsdam ran out to a 17-6 lead as Clarkson struggled from the floor and with turnovers to start the contest. However, after a time out, the Knights produced an 8-0 run that cut the advantage to just three points, thanks to a pair of 3-point field goals from Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) and Amanda Koenck (Pottstown, PA). Though Potsdam would successfully end the Clarkson run, the Bears went into the locker room with just a four-point advantage.

The second half produced another double-digit advantage for Potsdam early on, but again Clarkson was able to cut the lead to a single-possession, trailing by three points on numerous occasions. In the final two minutes of the game, the Knights often found themselves just one shot away from knotting up the contest, but the Bears were able to answer each with points of their own, holding on for the win.

Senior forward Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) led all scorers with 16 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line, and added in six rebounds. Brittany Whitton scored 14 points to lead Potsdam, while Courtney Poirier contributed 12 points.
