Schenectady, NY - A 15-0 streak at the start of the game proved to be the difference for Union on Saturday as the Dutchwomen defeated the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in Liberty League action, 65-45.
The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 3-18 overall and 1-9 in conference, while Union earned a weekend split and moved to 12-8 and 6-4. Clarkson hosts Hamilton and William Smith next weekend, the program's alumni weekend.
Clarkson was unable to score until the 13:18 mark of the first half, trailing by 15 points after the first seven minutes and 16 seconds. Though the margin was difficult to overcome, Clarkson did use a small 13-6 run to narrow the Union lead to just eight points at 5:59, following a Casey Laush (Westford, VT) 3-pointer. The Dutchwomen responded with a three-point field goal of their own on the next possession and held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, which ended at 34-20.
Six minutes into the second half, DeAndra Hebert's (Heuvelton, NY) jumper again brought Clarkson to within single digits, but for the second time, Union responded with a 3-point field goal on the very next possession to halt the Knights momentum. From there, the Dutchwomen continued to use their advantage in the post, gaining 16 offensive rebounds in the game, to control the contest and eventually win by 20.
Sophomore forward Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) went 4-for-6 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line to score a team-high 13 points for Clarkson. Devon Cliberto scored a game-high 16 points, making five of her nine field goal attempts, for the Dutchwomen. Union's Rachel Ormsby also shot 5-for-9 from the floor for 10 points.
