Potsdam, NY - Despite a late run of shots, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team came up short on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 Liberty League decision to Rensselaer.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-9-2 overall and 0-5-0 in Liberty League action while the Red Hawks improved to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in conference after posting their first league win.

Rensselaer came out strong with several shots in the first few minutes, and got on the scoreboard quickly in the opening minutes. With just over six minutes expired, Sara McMurray sent a cross into the penalty area and Briana Bet one-timed the pass out of mid-air for the score, her fourth of the season.

After that early flurry from the Red Hawks, the offensive chances minimized as both teams had just four shots in the first half. Most of Clarkson's came from a good distance, keeping their scoring opportunities low.

In the second half, Rensselaer added to its lead when Alexandra Fontanetta settled a cross into the box and then found the foot of Sarah Hinz just a few feet away, who moved just slightly to score on a groundball to the near corner at 48:41, her second goal of the season. The Red Hawks continued to put pressure on the Knights, but could not come up with another insurance goal.

In the final 20 minutes of the contest, the Golden Knights put considerable pressure on the Red Hawks thanks to several strong runs by junior Brittany Monroe (Massena, NY). However, it was Jill Collins (Potsdam, NY) who would put the Knights on the board with her third goal of the season. Clarkson was playing the ball down near the corner when one cross found its way to the foot of Deana Huntley (Canton, NY). The senior then sent a short pass to Collins, who took a high-arching shot from about 20 yards out. Rensselaer goalkeeper Meghan White tipped the ball, but was unable to control it and the ball bounced into the net to bring the Knights to within one at 77:25.

Clarkson and Rensselaer each had a few more opportunities to score, but neither was able to get any more goals so the score settled at 2-1 in favor of the Red Hawks.

Rensselaer out shot Clarkson 15-10 and had a 7-3 lead in corner kicks thanks to three consecutive opportunities late in the game. White made three saves for RPI and Caitlin Titus (Dewitt, NY) and Cait Spaeth (Essex, VT) split time to combine for nine saves.
