Saints Opportunistic In 2-0 Win Over Knights

September 28, 2006

Potsdam, NY - Setting up two goals off corner kicks, Stanzi McGlynn helped lead St. Lawrence past the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team 2-0 in a Liberty League match up Thursday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League conference while the Saints earned their first Liberty League win and evened their record at 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference.

On a sloppy field due to heavy rain, goal-scoring chances could come at any time with players slipping and puddles deepening. Sophomore Caitlin Quinn picked up her first goal of the season when a pair of Clarkson defenders could not gain proper footing on defense. Stanzi McGlynn sent an arching corner kick over the heads of several defenders in the goalie box where Quinn was able to tap the ball just past a Clarkson defender to put the Saints up 1-0 at 38:19 in the first half.

McGlynn again provided an assist on another corner kick when she sent the ball to the other side of the goal where Samantha Bealer put a head on it, sending the ball to the upper portion of the net at 81:41 in the second half.

Clarkson out shot St. Lawrence 12-6, but the Saints' 6-2 advantage in corner kicks proved to be the difference in the game.

St. Lawrence's Carly Draper made six saves for her third shutout of the season while Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY) stopped two shots.
