CAREY MOVES TO 7-0 IN THREE-HITTER AGAINST SKIDMORE

April 22, 2006

Saratoga Springs, NY - Junior Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) won his seventh game of the season with another complete-game effort as the Clarkson University Baseball team shut down Saratoga 6-1 Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League contest.

Game two of the doubleheader was postponed and the doubleheader scheduled for Sunday was also postponed. Make up dates for the games are yet to be determined. Clarkson improved to 14-14 overall and 7-6 in the Liberty League and the Thoroughbreds dropped to 14-13 and 5-7.

Carey's fourth complete game effort was another impressive performance as he allowed just three hits over seven innings and struck out six to improve to 7-0 on the season, joining 2000 All-America Matt Nolan as the only Clarkson pitchers to do so in the past 50 seasons. Carey has shown to be one of the top pitchers in the region as of late, producing 26 strikeouts and allowing only 12 hits in 24 innings over his last four appearances. On the season, Carey sports a 2.25 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 52 innings and entering this week only five other pitchers in the country had more wins without suffering a loss.

Clarkson quickly gave Carey all the run support he would need in the first inning, as four of the first five hitters reached base with Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT) and TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) each providing run-scoring hits. The Thoroughbreds picked up an unearned run in the third inning, but Clarkson came back with a run from Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) as he began a two-out rally with a single, then advanced around the bases with a stolen base, a passed ball and a wild pitch to give Clarkson a 3-1 lead. The Knights came through with two more in the sixth inning with the offense provided by Matt Mellert's (Penn Argyl, PA) double and a sacrifice fly from Giordano. Mellert drove in another run in the seventh for Clarkson's final tally. Mellert was the only Clarkson player to produce a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with his two RBI.
