KNIGHTS END CONFERENCE LOSING STREAK WITH VICTORY OVER VASSAR

February 3, 2006

Potsdam, NY – Junior forward Sarah Wesner (Sidney, NY) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds as the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team jumped into the winning column in the Liberty League with a 56-46 win over Vassar on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in conference play while the Brewers dropped to 6-10 overall and 1-7 in the Liberty League. Clarkson returns to action tomorrow when they host Rensselaer.

Wesner started off the game making her first six shots, including two from the field and four from the free throw line for eight points in the opening six minutes to give the Knights a modest four-point advantage. After a quick four-point swing from the Brewers, the Golden Knights extended their lead with a 11-0 run midway through the half to take a 12-point lead, 42-10 with 3:40 remaining in the half. In a span of just 100 seconds, however, Vassar cut the double-digit advantage in half with a 7-0 run. The Knights came through with a pair of baskets in the final minutes for a 28-17 lead at the half.

Wesner and Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT) each scored 11 points in the opening 20 minutes and combined for 12 rebounds. Meredith McGair scored a team-high six points for the Brewers in the first half, but was held to only 11 minutes played due to foul trouble.

Vassar took advantage of its superior size in the first few minutes to cut into the Knights’ lead, bringing the Brewers within five points, 35-30, at 12:37. Clarkson came right back with a 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Vanessa Westcott (Parish, NY) and a 10-foot jumper from Kelly Fink (Verona, NY) with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Brewers continued to chip away over the course of the final minutes of the game, but Clarkson was able to respond with free throws to hold on for the victory.

Fritjofson contributed 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 40 minutes for Clarkson while Westcott added 11 points, including three 3-point field goals. McGair closed with 15 points for the Brewers while Rachel Cerlen came on with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks for Vassar.
