CARDINALS DOWN KNIGHTS 48-42

December 7, 2005

Potsdam, NY – Despite two end of half charges that narrowed the lead of their opponents, the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team came up short against Plattsburgh State Wednesday night, falling 48-42 in a non-league game at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-3 on the season with the loss while Plattsburgh State improved to 3-3 overall. Clarkson will close out the first semester this weekend when they travel to play in the Hartwick Tournament.

Clarkson struggled in the opening 15 minutes of the game, falling behind 21-7 after a pair of free throws with 4:38 remaining. Starting with an Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY) jump shot banked in at the 3:55 mark, the Golden Knights ended the half with a 13-0 run that culminated with a 3-point field goal at the buzzer by Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT).

Sarah Wesner (Sidney, NY) scored six points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots to lead the Golden Knights in the opening 20 minutes. The Cardinals’ Yuri Inomata shot 3-for-4 in the first half to lead all scorers with seven points, also dishing out two assists. Meredith Mooney and Vanessa Arthurton also added six points for Plattsburgh.

The second half saw the Cardinals again race out to a double-digit lead, enjoying an 11-point advantage at the 10:16 mark with a 37-26. After Clarkson pulled to within three with 6:41 left, Plattsburgh was able to maintain a two-possession advantage for the majority of the half, but had a scare when Fritjofson buried a jumper with less than 20 seconds left before putting the game out of reach with free throws.

Rene Klementowski closed the game with 14 points and six rebounds to lead Plattsburgh State with Vanessa Arthurton adding 13 points and six boards of her own. Wesner scored 13 points to lead Clarkson while freshman Kelly Fink (Verona, NY) grabbed 10 rebounds coming off the bench.
