FERNANDEZ SCORES 22 IN LOSS TO SKIDMORE

January 29, 2005

Potsdam, NY – Senior point guard Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) scored a game-high 22 points and added five more steals, but her late-game effort came just up short as Skidmore defeated the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team 59-54 in a Liberty League game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights lost their seventh consecutive game, falling to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in conference play while Skidmore moved to 7-10 and 2-5 in conference play. Clarkson ends their five-game homestand next weekend when they host Vassar and Union.

Like Friday, Clarkson fell behind early and had to play catch up throughout the first half. The Knights fell behind by nine points early, but battled back to within two, only to see Skidmore slowly extend their lead to double digits at the end of the half. The Thoroughbreds shot 45.8 percent in the half, well above their season field goal percentage, and also went 8-for-11 from the free throw line.

In the second half, the Golden Knights fell behind by 14 points, 45-31, midway through the half, but Clarkson went on a 14-0 run to tie the game at the 6:10 mark. With foul trouble looming for both teams, Skidmore was able to recapture the lead and hold it with their shooting from the free throw line, finishing 21-for-26 at the line.

Fernandez, who scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half, shot 8-for-12 from the floor and added five rebounds and four assists for Clarkson. Freshman Amanda Czop (Athens, NY) also contributed four steals.

Lisa Mason and Shanley Irving each scored 12 points for the Thoroughbreds and Katie Bronson added eight points and 10 rebounds.
