WIND AIDS GOLDEN EAGLES PAST CLARKSON 10-2

April 19, 2004

Brockport, NY – Windy conditions did nothing to help the Clarkson University Baseball team’s cause Monday afternoon as the Golden Knights dropped a non-league game to Brockport State 10-2.

The Golden Knights, who fell to 11-13 on the season, return to action at 1:00 pm on Wednesday when they host Plattsburgh State at Snell Field.

In the opening game, the Golden Knights struck first with an unearned run when Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) scored on an errant throw from the Brockport third baseman. The Golden Eagles answered back with a run in the bottom of the third. With very strong wind gusts blowing out to right field, Clarkson added a second run in the top of the fourth when Mike Ruffinen (Wynantskill, NY) hit a solo home run to right center, extending his hitting streak to 11 straight games, a season-high for Clarkson. Brockport scored three in the bottom of the inning, two coming when Clarkson starter Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) threw away a pick off attempt at third base. Brockport added another run on an RBI single by John Morgan, making the score 4-2. Tim Wilson added a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of a three-run fifth inning for the Golden Eagles. Brockport added another wind-aided home run in the sixth inning when Rob Gladwell’s shot cleared the 315 sign down the right field line.

In the second contest, Evan Weaver (Lafayette, NY), who finished the first game for the Golden Knights, pitched two scoreless innings before getting touched up for a run in the third inning. The Golden Knights had opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) scored from third base on a balk and Jamie Tunison (Ithaca, NY) came home on a single by Mike Onisk (Baldwinsville, NY). After scoring one in the third, Brockport tied the game and went ahead with three more runs in the fourth inning thanks to three well-placed singles from Ryan Mohr, Rob Astalos and Mike Ranalli. Mohr hit a blooper into center, Astalos hit a ground ball between the third baseman and shortstop and Ranalli bunted down the line to produce the three RBI in the inning. The Golden Knights responded with three in the bottom of the inning, including two on a single up the middle by Ruffinen, but even more inclement weather came in and the game was washed out with the Knights leading 5-4 after four and a half innings.

Because the second game did not reach the bottom half of the fifth inning and there is no intention on its completion, the game's statistics will not count.
