February 14, 2004

Erika Fritjofson scored a game-high 18 points against Union
Potsdam, NY - Despite three solid looks at a lay up in the final seconds, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team fell just short of a shocking upset Union, the top team in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Conference (UCAA), as the Golden Knights fell 46-45 Saturday afternoon at Clarkson's Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-16 overall and 2-10 in the UCAA, while the Dutchmen improved to 19-3 and 11-1 in the conference

In the opening half, the Golden Knights fell behind 9-2 in the first few minutes, but battled back to take a 11-9 lead at the 12:15 mark. After dropping behind by five points a few minutes later, the Golden Knights ended the half with a 12-4 run, concluded on a 3-pointer by Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT) in the final seconds. Fritjofson scored 12 points in the first half on 4-for-9 shooting, including two 3-pointers, while Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) added four  points and four steals. Melissa Marra scored six points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Union. The Dutchmen struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting 8-for-30, a percentage of 26.7, while Clarkson shot 10-for-26.

The Golden Knights could not keep up their pace in the second half and missed their first 10 field goal attempts, but actually retook the lead 30-29 after falling behind the Dutchmen at the 16-minute mark. Union controlled the second half with a five-to-six point advantage for most of the half, however the Golden Knights were able to close the gap to a single point at 46-45 on two free throws from Sarah Wesner. Clarkson had three shots in the final seconds, but Fernandez, Kate Quist (Winchendon, MA) and Bridget Sweeney (Corning, NY) each missed shots from in close before the buzzer sounded.

Fritjofson closed with a game-high 18 points while Fernandez, Sweeney, and Mickala Henson (Waverly, NY) each added eight points. Fernandez also recorded five steals, the second of which gave her the single-season school record for the Golden Knights. Katlyn Cunningham scored 14 points to lead Union, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor. Erika Eisenhut added nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals for the Dutchmen.
